Ngorongoro Crater

A natural amphitheatre holding one of Africa's densest wildlife populations.

Overview

Formed when a volcano larger than Kilimanjaro collapsed on itself two to three million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained ecosystem 600 metres deep and 260 square kilometres wide, home to an estimated 25,000 large animals.
