Kilimanjaro
Is Kilimanjaro Hard? An Honest Answer
The Minutes Tours Editorial · 1 min read · December 9, 2025
Kilimanjaro requires no ropes, no climbing experience and no technical skill on any of its standard trekking routes. The difficulty is almost entirely a function of altitude and time.
Acute mountain sickness can affect fit, experienced hikers just as easily as first-timers — it is not primarily a fitness problem. The single biggest lever you control is route length: a 7-day Machame itinerary gives your body meaningfully more time to acclimatise than a 5-day version of the same route.
'Pole pole' — slowly, slowly, in Swahili — isn't a cliché your guide repeats for atmosphere. Deliberately slow pacing genuinely improves summit outcomes by reducing oxygen demand at altitude.
A realistic training plan in the months beforehand — regular cardio and multi-hour hiking with a loaded pack — matters more than any piece of gear on your kit list.
