Zanzibar's Coasts Compared: Where to Base Yourself

The Minutes Tours Editorial · 1 min read · January 18, 2026

The northeast coast around Matemwe and Kiwengwa offers a good balance of reef access and lower tidal swing, making it a reliable choice for swimmers who want the beach usable at most tide levels.

Nungwi, at the island's northern tip, has minimal tidal variation and a livelier stretch of restaurants and dive operators — a fit for travellers who want some evening activity alongside the beach.

Paje and the southeast coast are the island's kitesurfing centre, with strong, consistent wind for much of the year, but a more dramatic tidal range that empties the beach at low tide.

Stone Town itself isn't a beach base, but few itineraries should skip it entirely — even two nights folded into a longer beach stay adds real texture to a Zanzibar trip.
